The defender ccw was designed for narrow slide, concealed carry handguns that come so the optic can be direct mounted without the use of a plate. The shield rms-c has become essentially a standard footprint for those types of pistols, so no adapter plate is needed.
On "full size" handguns, there are still a variety of footprints on the market for dots, so adapters plates are typically needed and so the plate is added as a standard spare part for the ST.
